Key Features:
- Signature Reddish-Brown Color: These dried leaves are prized for their natural plant-based pigments (anthocyanins), which infuse your rice and beans with the beautiful, iconic reddish-brown hue unique to true Waakye.
- Authentic Earthy Flavor: Beyond color, the leaves impart a subtle, unique, and earthy aroma and flavor, elevating a simple rice and beans meal into a rich, complex, and traditional culinary experience.
- Natural & Nutritious: Sourced from the West African sorghum plant, our leaves are 100% natural, free from artificial colors or preservatives, and are rich in antioxidants, making them a healthy addition to your meals.
- Versatile Use: While essential for Waakye, the rich, colored water can also be used as a natural dye base for other rice dishes, soups, or stews to add an appealing depth of color and flavor.
How to Use:
- Rinse: Thoroughly rinse a handful of leaves under clean water.
- Steep & Boil: Add the leaves to your pot of water with your black-eyed peas (or beans). Boil and allow the leaves to steep until the water turns a deep reddish-brown.
- Cook: Add your rice and cook as usual in the beautifully colored, infused water until tender.
- Serve: Remove and discard the leaves before serving your perfectly colored and flavored Waakye with your favorite accompaniments like shito, spaghetti, egg, or fried plantain.
